Update: Training deadline extended to October 1, 2017 for Ontario at height construction workers

March 9, 2017

On April 1, 2015, the Ontario Ministry of Labour introduced a new regulation (O. Reg. 297/13) that affected workers at height. It gave Ontario employers a two-year transition period to ensure that all construction workers who use fall protection systems complete an approved working at heights program. The deadline for this requirement has been extended by six months to October 1, 2017.

Construction workers must provide employers with written proof of enrollment in an approved working at heights program that can be provided to an inspector upon request. The proof of enrollment must include: the name of the worker, the date on which approved training will be completed and the name of the approved training program.

Workers on construction sites must complete an approved training program if they use any of the following types of fall protection while on the job:

  • Travel restraint systems
  • Fall restricting systems
  • Fall arrest systems
  • Safety nets
  • Work belts or safety belts

Successfully completing an approved working at heights training program ensures that workers’ training is valid for three years. After the three year period, a refresher program must be taken by the worker on a construction site.

The 3M Canada Fall Protection Group offers an Ontario Ministry of Labour-approved training program to ensure that at height construction workers are fully certified before beginning a job. The 6212 Fall Protection Working at Heights Program (6212 V1.0) is an eight and a half hour training program in Mississauga, Ontario that is specifically designed for workers in the Ontario construction industry. The program includes practical and theoretical training to equip at height workers with the knowledge they need to safely perform their job. Highly regarded for its educational content, design and delivery, this program exceeds the requirements of the training standard. Successful completion of this program provides workers with a training credential that is valid for three years.
