CSA Z94.4-18: Review of updates and changes

CAN/CSA-Z94.4-Selection, use and care of respirators Z94.4-18

  • Released in September 2018
  • Fifth edition; Supersedes the previous editions (2011, 2002, 1993 and 1982)
  • Specifies requirements for the selection, use and care of respirators and the administration of a respiratory protection program (RPP)
  • The standard is based on Respirator classifications and testing requirements set out by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH). Specific criteria for firefighting applications are based on standards published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

A number of changes have been introduced in this edition of the 2018 Standard

Points where additional clarification and guidance has been provided:
  • The supervisor’s role in a RPP (Clause 5.3) (minor: pertaining to manufacturer’s recommendations and cleaning, inspection, maintenance and storage)
  • How hazard and risk assessments are to be used for selection of respirators (specifically where both chemical and bioaerosol hazards are present) (Clause 6)
  • Requirements for initial and subsequent periodic training (Clause 8,2.5) (i.e, repeat training if review cannot confirm qualification)
  • Health assessment is needed prior to fit testing (not only prior to respirator use) (Clause 12)
  • Handling of respirator interference concerns (Clause 9.2)
  • Annex K, providing scenarios for bioaerosol exposure situations
  • Greater emphasis on comfort during respirator selection and fit testing (Clause 14.4, expanded Annexes B, C)
NEW: additions to the standard (informative only):
  • Annex (N): guidance on measurement of bioaerosols and determining exposure limit
  • Annex (O): information on the persistence of bacteria, fungi, viruses, other pathogens on surfaces/in air
  • Annex (Q): guidance on accommodation of individuals having special needs
  • Annex (R): sample respirator fit testing record form (Clause 14.4)
